The sonic and lyrical themes of Wrong Side of History range from immigration & racial justice, to more personal battles with mental health and loss of love. With the catchier, pop-punky earworms like “Fake,” and “Living Proof,” the band is playfully frustrated, manically snare-drumming away at depression and, dare-we-say, youthful political angst. In the heavier, emo-jazz tunes like “Arrivals” and “Flicker,” the guitars get craftier and the mood gets heavier. The narrative focus shifts to the promise-and-plight of the modern immigrant and the sobering grief of two sons and a sick mother.
